But Creative Commons licenses are copyright licenses – plain and simple. They are legal tools that creators can use to offer certain usage rights to the public, while reserving other rights. Without copyright, these tools don’t work.
Creative Commons founding board member Lawrence Lessig has now responded to this untrue attack in a column on the Huffington Post, challenging ASCAP president and chairman, Paul Williams, to a debate.

[press release] From the 8th to the 11th of October 2009, Netaudio Berlin will be gathering the international netaudio community for a 4 day music and conference festival in Berlin, under the title “East meets West”. 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain, we recall pictures of helping hands reaching out to pull people from both sides up on to the Berlin wall. The event will take place at Maria, a venue situated immediately on the former Berlin ‘death strip’ once di- viding the city and the world into eastern and western hemispheres. In recent years a netaudio landscape has emerged in the countries of Eastern Europe. Speakers, artists and netlabel managers from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from the USA are invited to fi nd out more about the needs and possibilities, challenges and chances of netaudio under the various cultural frameworks and to discuss new opportunities for networking and collaboration across borders and cultures.

The musical focus lies on a selection of Berlin’ fi nest electronic music, namely, House, Techno and Minimal. However, many artists from the fi elds of Ambient, Noise, Dub, Drum’n’Bass, Pop, Triphop, Dubstep, Breakbeats, Drone, Hip Hop and Techdub will add to the varied musical program. Although the netaudio scene consists of artists mostly unknown to the broader public, many names have already earned international recognition. This is refl ected in the lineup of the evening program, crowned by such illustrious fi gures as Pheek, D. Diggler, Erich Lesovsky, Marc Schneider, Gold- will, Tanith, Stereoshape, SCSI-9, Disrupt, Holger Flinsch, Marko Fürstenberg, and the Kraftfuttermischwerk. With over 100 participating artists spread over 3 nights, the netaudio festival gives a comprehensive insight into the various musical genres and brings netaudio music to life for participants and visitors. The day program includes numer- ous workshops and discussions with top experts as well as a fi lm program, showcases, a netaudio-(label) exhibition, and various contributions from other art forms.

The Berliner Crew has benefi ted from their experience during the previous Berlin Festival in 2007 and from their involve- ment with international partners in London, Moscow, Barcelona and Bologna. In addition to their ambition to further develop the netaudio scene worldwide, the organizers also hope to strengthen the position of Berlin as a hub between East and West, by integrating various netlabels from all parts of Europe. The organizers are sending a signal of excla- mation to the netaudio community, especially in the countries of Eastern Europe.

The Cologne Commons crew did a great job in organizing this event, and I would like to thank them for inviting me.

I recently got involved with video again and just released my second music video featuring the track ‘Ein Bild von Dir’ by Gleichschalter [broque018]. Using Creative Commons licensed music in a video turned out to be a bit more complicated than expected. According to a document published by Creative Commons, one can not use music under a No Derivative Works (ND) license. In case of my music videos I got permission, and for some other videos I used music with an Attribution (BY) or Attribution-ShareAlike (BY-SA) license. Most netlabels featured here on Sonic Walker publish their work under a No Derivative Works (ND) license and since mp3 files usually don’t carry any license information, it is not easy to search for music by license type. A good place to find music which you can use and remix is Jamendo. On Jamendo one can search by artist, album, tags etc. in combination with the desired CC license (example).

If you are interested in creating and sharing your own netaudio videos you can add them to the Netaudio Group on Vimeo.
